Eye Check-ups Extra Important For Young Children

Parents and carers are being urged to take their young children for regular eye check ups.

Parents group, Families Leeds and Paul Appleson, an optometrist from Wetherby, are trying to persuade parents and carers from across the city to take their children for regular check-ups. They hope that a trip to the opticians will be seen in a similar light to the importance of check-ups at the dentist.

Recent surveys revealed that a third of all eight year olds have never had their eyes tested. Although this may not seem that drastic, a simple problem such as a lazy eye may have been avoidable but is now too late to rectify.

Mr Appleson said: “There are certain conditions that can only be corrected before the age of eight, without a test a child will probably end up with an eye problem throughout their life. That’s why we use the warning, ‘Eight is too late.’”

Every child under the age of 16 is entitled to a free eye test on the NHS. There are two local opticians that are child friendly and look forward to seeing more people taking eye tests.
