Holt Park Medical Practice to remain open

March 26th, 2015 · No Comments · Community News

Holt Park Medical PracticeNHS England has made a decision that Holt Park Medical Practice should not be allowed to close. This decision follows a successful online community campaign which was signed by over 100 supporters.

The surgery, which serves the Holt Park, Cookridge and Tinshill area, contacted patients at the end of last year about the proposed closure, suggesting they transfer to the GP practice at Moor Grange.

The petition also pointed out that current housing development in Bodington Manor, Cookridge Hospital and Centurion Fields with more planned in the area, including older people’s housing next to the Holt Park surgery, is increasing the population, creating a need for more not fewer GP services in the area.

Local doctors had proposed merging with Abbey Medical Centre and Moor Grange surgeries as they felt that this would allow them to provide an increased range of services to patients but as part of the merger, the two practices intended to take out the GP practice from the Holt Park Health Centre. Community services would have continued at Holt Park Health Centre, but GP appointments at Holt Park would have ceased following the merger of the three practices, as the GPs felt it would have been difficult to run the practice from 3 sites.

However NHS England have now announced that while the merger would still be going ahead, the surgery in Holt Park will remain open beyond April. Holt Park patients had been advised that to see their GP, they would have to attend either the Abbey Medical Centre, or Moor Grange surgeries in the event of the closure of Holt Park, but many were concerned at the distance and difficulty of travelling to these alternative surgeries.
