Holt Park To Be Without Leisure Centre for 8 Months

Leeds City Council officials have confirmed that Holt Park will be without leisure centre facilities for up to 8 months.

From around September 2012 local residents and users of Holt Park Leisure Centre will need to use other facilities available across the city.

In a public consultation to discuss the £30.6 million Holt Park Active Living Centre, replacement to the current Holt Park Leisure Centre, it was stated that a transitional period of between 6-8 months would be required. This is partly for construction and service work but also because the new Active Living Centre cannot open with the existing centre still there.

Gonnie Rutton of Leeds City Council said: “In order to have the Active Living Centre up and running we must first knock down the current centre. This will take place around September 2012 possibly a month later.”

Many in attendance at the meeting were puzzled as to why Holt Park Leisure Centre could not stay open longer and thus limiting the closure of facilities.. One woman said: “I don’t understand why it must take so long.”

“Unfortunately there needs to be a period of transition to prepare everything.” said Ms Rutton

The issue of premature closure was one also raised by Adel and Wharefdale’s Councillor Barry Anderson. He was anxious about the impact that it will have on disabled people who currently use the leisure centre.

Cllr Anderson said: “The service for disabled people at Holt Park Leisure Centre is second to none. I’m just worried that when it closes and there is no service in the area are other centres they will have to use such as Kirkstall going to be as accommodating?”

In response to this a representative of Holt Park Leisure Centre said: “I am confident that when our customers are relocated they will receive the same service.”

Building work is set to start on Holt Park Active Living Centre in October of this year. Completion is estimated for May 2013 and due to open in Spring/Summer 2013.
