Lord Of The Dance Visits Holt Park’s OPAL

January 23rd, 2012 · No Comments · Community News

Members of OPAL (Older people’s Action in the Locality) were joined by a special guest to celebrate their 100th tea dance.

The Lord mayor of Leeds, Councillor Reverend Taylor, dusted off his dancing shoes and joined the group in commemorating the milestone in the best way they know.

Meeting fortnightly in Adel and Ireland Wood Community Centre, OPAL members maintain their favourite past times of ballroom dancing and afternoon through a traditional tea dance.

Project coordinator, Ailsa Rhodes, said: “The appeal is predominantly about the music and about the fact that it takes them back. There aren’t many places that do tea dances any more.”

“Some of them have been to dances all over the world. It’s an absolute passion.”

This is just one of the activities OPAL holds to help over 60s across Holt Park and the surrounding areas.

Alissa added: “It’s reducing their isolation, getting them out, keeping them moving and providing support and friendship.

The Lord Mayor enjoyed his waltz and said:: “The tea dance is a fantastic opportunity for the older generation to come together for a great social occasion. I was pleased to be able to attend this special event.”
