September 4th, 2012 · No Comments · Community News

Cookridge Fire Station may be forced to merge with another in Leeds as part of cost cutting measures.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, in a bid to save up to £12 million, is considering the merger or closure of numerous stations across the county.

Under the recommendations, by West Yorkshire’s Chef Fire Officer, Cookridge fire station would merge with Moortown fire station at one location containing just one fire engine.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Pilling said:

We know we have to find cuts of between and £8-12m over the next two years, and already have plans in place, but all the messages coming out of central government project further reductions in financial support for local authorities up to 2020

Mr Pilling’s proposals would see the number of fire-fighters be reduced by 200. The reccomendations for Leeds are as follows

  • Merge Hunslet and Morley fire stations at a two-appliance station between the two.
  • Merge Rothwell and Garforth at a one-appliance station between the two.
  • Merge Cookridge and Moortown at a one-appliance station between the two.
  • Remove an appliance from Stanningley.

If  West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority agree to go to public consultation with the recommendations then more details will be published after 7th September.
