Beware of Bogus Charity Fund Raisers

July 26th, 2011 · 1 Comment · Crime

A new scam has emerged and been reported in our local area.
Holt Park Microsoft Phone ScamA man calling door to door collecting cash claiming he is fundraising for Macmillan Nursing, by undertaking a range of activities including bungee jumping, sky diving, white water rafting is operating in the local area

He does not have any badge. No letterhead or authority. This activity has been on a two month regular basis.

When questioned he said his name is Andrew Clark, living on Green Lane, Cookridge (The Manor House), but at a latter date when challenged (24th July), he retracted this information saying he doesn’t live on Green Lane.

Concillor Barry Anderson commented

“I understand from a recent conversation with a resident of Kirkwood Gardens, that similar collector (working), in this area, was recently apprehended by the community police, and that he had been cautioned.

I took this issue up both with the Police and with West Yorkshire Trading Standards and have received the following replies:”

1. From the Police:

“I have asked PC 2552 Goulden who normally covers the Horsforth area to pay some attention in the area today and I have copied all the ward 1 officers into your e-mail for passing attention.”

2. From West Yorkshire Trading Standards:

“We’ve nothing on this and suspect it would be reported to and actioned by neighbourhood police teams, as it is simply theft if an individual purports to collect on behalf of legitimate charities. Any authorised collectors would have proper identification etc, but the simplest advice is never deal on the doorstep under any circumstances. I’m not sure whether you have any No Cold Calling Zones set up in your area, but I’ll pass the information onto an officer here who works with districts on these joint projects. Unfortunately she’s just gone on leave for 2 weeks, so there’ll be a delay until she returns.”
