Violent Robbery

A robbery of a security van took place at the ASDA in Holt Park today.

The robbery took place at around 13.30 this afternoon as money was being delivered to the store.

The security guard of the van was hit with a metal pole in the entrance to the Holt Park shopping centre. The money he was carrying was stolen.

Shoppers tried to stop the robbery taking place by throwing baskets and a bin in the way.

Police were called and a West Yorkshire Police helicopter was scrambled to try and track down the culprits.

The thieves then took off in a silver X-type Jaguar they had arrived in which was then later dumped and burnt out in Holtdale Fold.

The assaulted security guard was treated by an ASDA first aider, Tina Watmough, before two paramedics arrived to take him to the LGI

The security guard’s injuries are not serious but he has been left very badly shaken.

Police at the scene dusted the entrance to the shopping centre for finger prints and forensic evidence. This resulted in shoppers having to use the ASDA fire exit to enter and leave the centre.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have found the white metal bar discarded in the area.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, saw the men running off from the abandoned vehicle or who has any information is asked to contact Weetwood police station via 0845 6060606 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
