A campaign by a group of youths in Holt Park has led to their passion for football being rewarded.

The campaign group, made up of teenage boys from Ralph Thoresby School, were disgruntled at how the football posts on Tinshill playing fields had been taken down over the summer.

Rather than just moan about it, the group approached the Holt Park Tenants and Residents association as well as local MP Greg Mulholland to see what could be done about the issue.

One of the lads involved, Chris Moseley said: “When we found out that the goal posts had been taken down we were pretty gutted because we play football on the field every week. So we went to see Greg to ask if he could do anything to help. The group organised a petition and collected signatures. In response to the requests Leeds City Council, Parks and Countryside marked out a five-a-side pitch complete with goal posts for use over the summer holidays.

Upon finding out their hard work had been a success Mr Moseley said: “We were really happy when Greg told us that they had been put back in and we will use the pitch as often as we can.”

Mr Mulholland said: “It is absolutely fantastic news that Leeds City Council have agreed to put together a five-a-side pitch and have erected goal posts for the local community to use during the school summer holidays. A lot of praise for this successful campaign must go to the lads who came to see me to ask for help in securing these goal posts.”

He added: “This just demonstrates what can be done when the whole community work together in campaigning on issues such as this, it is fantastic when all the hard work pays off. I hope the whole community are able to take advantage of the pitch and the goal posts during the summer holidays.”

The goal posts also have nets available to use with them that are retained by the Holt Park Tenants and Residents Association. If any local teams require nets call 07901656886 providing 24 hours notice. There is a £10 deposit.

Hello Francis good to hear from you. Thank you for leaving a comment.

We think it is fantastic too, hopefully it will give others in the local area hope, that if they want something to happen they just need to put their idea forwards and ask the right people.

I’m pleased they got their goals and football nets :)
