150,000 Lives Endangered In Our Area With Cuts To Fire Fighting Budget

September 30th, 2012 · Community News

By Joel Beaumont
Cuts to the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s budget are set to have wide ranging effects across the county including here in Holt Park.

Cookridge Fire Station is set to be merged with Moortown Fire Station to form a brand new station under the proposals by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority.

Under the proposals, reported by Holt Park Today on September 4th, the Fire Authority are looking to save £12 million across the county.

The merger of Cookridge and Moortown would see a new fire station built near to the ring road in Weetwood.

The two fire stations currently provide the initial emergency response for the Adel and Wharfedale, Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Horsforth, Moortown, Roundhay and Weetwood wards. These fire stations cover an area that contains approximately 68,000 houses and has a population of around 158,000. Both stations currently operate with one fire engine each and are crewed by 5 staff.

Despite overall operational activity falling in the last 5 years between the two stations, Cookridge and Moortown fire stations remain classified as medium and high risk respectively.

Chief Fire Officer Simon Pilling said:

“We will continue to provide an efficient and effective fire and rescue service whilst acknowledging the challenges posed by fundamental changes to public sector funding. Despite these financial challenges we now face, we cannot lose sight of our ambition of making West Yorkshire safer.”

The proposals are currently in the public consultation stage of proceedings and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority invite members of the public to put forward their views.

Formal representations (to be received by 30 November 2012) MUST be made in writing/email and directed for the attention of Hannah Stoneman, Consultation Co-ordinator, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, Oakroyd Hall, Bradford Road, Birkenshaw BD11 2DY or consultation@westyorksfire.gov.uk

The consultation period ends on November 30th and a decision will not be made until December 21st.
