Holt Park Wellbeing Centre Finally Approved

April 13th, 2011 · Community News

by Joel Beaumont

The Wellbeing Centre for Holt Park has been given the green light after a review of the nation’s spending reinstated funding for the shelved project.

The Department of Health has announced that the £30 million pound regeneration scheme of Holt Park Leisure Centre, turning it into a social hub, has had its PFI funding approved.

Leeds City Council executive member for adult health and social care Councillor Lucinda Yeadon said: “We were delighted to hear this morning that the Department of Health has approved the new wellbeing centre for Holt Park. The new centre will provide a much-needed new resource for people of all ages in north-west Leeds to access a whole range of health facilities and services.”

Work on the centre was two weeks away from beginning when it was stalled under the coalition government’s spending review. Many across Holt Park, including local MP Greg Mulholland campaigned against cutting funding for the centre.

On hearing the news that the project had been approved Mr Mulholland said: “Having worked closely with the residents of Holt Park as well as with local councillors, the council and NHS Leeds, I am delighted that the Department for Health is to provide the funding needed for the development.”

“Holt Park and the surrounding area have been in desperate need of redevelopment and the news that the wellbeing centre has been given the go ahead is a huge boost for the whole area and the residents that will benefit from the range of services it will offer.”

As well as offering the services currently on offer at Holt Park Leisure Centre the Wellbeing Centre, under its proposed new title Holt Park Active Living Centre, will also a café, garden area, disability hub and elderly persons’ sector.

Adel and Wharfedale ward Councillor Barry Anderson said: “It is encouraging to see that the government has recognised just how vital the Centre will be for the people of Holt Park, and has decided to get behind the project. I look forward to the scheme progressing and to the string of benefits it will bring to the local area.”
