WARNING to Residents Over New Telephone Scam!

November 19th, 2010 · Crime

By Joel Beaumont
A new telephone scam is escalating with people from the local area affected. Police are warning the public to be more vigilant.

The scam is quite simple but may fool many. The caller receives a call from someone claiming they are from their phone company and demanding payment for an unpaid bill.

In order to prove their legitimacy the caller will tell you to hang up and try call out and they will disconnect your phone to prevent this.

They will not have disconnected you, simply muted the call from their end and not hung up. Upon hearing your failed attempts they will then call back claiming this has just proved they were from the phone company and demand the credit card payment immediately, otherwise you will be “cut off”.

A member of the Holt Park OPAL group, recently a victim of the scam said:
“It’s very convincing, but the sad thing is it is so simple that it will certainly fool a lot of people.”

“I phoned the Police and was informed I wasn’t the first, it’s only just started, but it is escalating.”

Police are urging the public to spread the word about this scam. So please help by informing your friends and family.
