Ralph Thoresby High School Ofsted inspection
Staff and students at Ralph Thoresby School are celebrating the outcome of a recent Ofsted inspection which found the school to be ‘Good’ in all aspects, recognising the significant improvements made in recent years.

Inspectors were impressed with the ‘calm and purposeful’ atmosphere around the school which has seen GCSE and A Level results improve significantly in the last 2 years and currently sits in 5th place in the city’s exam league tables for ‘value added’ performance at GCSE. ‘Students are pleasant, polite and courteous. They are proud of their school’, the report reveals.

‘Good and sometimes outstanding teaching’ and leadership which is ‘highly ambitious for the students’ has created a climate in which ‘students make exceptional progress’. The report makes it clear that Ralph Thoresby is a dynamic and forward thinking school where ‘morale is high and there is a culture of high expectations’.

Headteacher Will Carr, who was appointed in 2012, was delighted that Ofsted had recognised the excellent practice at Ralph Thoresby, ‘The entire school community has worked incredibly hard to move the school forward and we all deserve the accolades that this report brings. We will continue to be ambitious for the students and we are confident that we have the talent, the commitment and the momentum to improve still further and be recognised as outstanding’.

Students, staff and parents are working closely together in a school where ‘partnership working is strong’. As Year 12 student and aspiring medic, Shoaib Hussain put it, ‘Every teacher at Ralph Thoresby School is focused on helping you achieve and exceed your personal and academic targets. From amazing lessons to the huge number of extra-curricular activities, I know that the opportunities on offer at Ralph Thoresby School make me stand out and be truly competitive when it comes to pursuing my longer-term ambitions’.

Coming hot on the heels of the positive Leeds Children’s Services Ofsted inspection, this outcome for Ralph Thoresby is another reason to be proud of our ‘child friendly’ city.
