A group of councillors and department officials are today heading to Parliament to put forward a final bid to save the Holt Park Wellbeing Centre.

MP Greg Mullholland will lead the group with an appeal to his party colleague Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury to save the £30 million project.

Mullholland said: “The centre would be a massive benefit to the local community and a step in the right direction for the development of the area.

“This meeting offers the opportunity for us to let the people in the Treasury know just how important this centre is to the people of Leeds.”

The Wellbeing Centre had funding approved by the former Labour government and was 2 weeks away from building work commencing when the plug was pulled on the operation, by the newly elected Con/Lib coalition.

Labour councillor Mark Dobson, who is also chairman of the health scrutiny board, said: “I welcome the meeting. A new centre would integrate health and leisure services with services for older people and a new centre would provide a holistic centre for the most vulnerable people of Leeds”

Adel and Warfedale Conservative councillor Barry Anderson added: “I welcome this opportunity to put forward the benefits that this development will bring to the local community, in particular the needs of local disabled residents and those residents facing social isolation. The facility will enable these residents in particular to improve their quality of life.”

Whether the appeal is successful will be determined on the 20th October when the government announces the results of the Spending Review.
